Powell Street Festival – August 5 & 6
Powell Street Festival
August 5 & 6, 2017
Oppenheimer Park, Vancouver
BTA is proud to be a long-term supporter of the Powell Street Festival. Celebrating Japanese Canadian art and culture, the Powell Street Festival is the largest Japanese Canadian festival in the country and the longest running community arts celebration in Vancouver.
Beyond the financial support needed to keep the Powell Street Festival thriving into its 41st year and beyond, BTA lends mentorship to a student design competition. The competition, now in its 2nd year, comes with the challenge to design an interactive installation for the festival. This year’s winning team, “Macro Maki,” has created a playful installation that invites festivalgoers to don to pillow-sized sushi costumes and shoot selfies on a stage that’s designed like a massive wooden sushi tray. BTA’s Shinobu Homma and James Brown, together with Gary Smith of Abaton Projects, have been working with the Macro Maki team and having a lot of fun by the looks of it. https://www.instagram.com/p/BV-8sikj5Sp/?tagged=macromaki
