Binhai Performing Arts Centre Tianjin, China

Info

Located north of the Yujiapu Financial District, the Binhai Performing Arts Centre is part of a new cultural corridor in the growing Binhai district of Tianjin which also includes museum, art gallery, civic center, and library.

Visitors to the performing arts centre are welcomed by a four-story shared entrance hall, before filtering into the black box experimental theatre on the ground floor or ascending the grand staircase towards the opera house auditorium. The second floor opera house lobby boasts a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Ziyun Park. Carefully positioned away from the audience path, the art school facilities and the theatre offices are located on the third and fourth floor.

The 1200 seat opera house is spatially organized by a low half-circle wall that encloses the central seating area while the open side-seating balcony areas breakdown the traditional separation between the stage and audience. The 400 seat black box theatre is oval shaped in plan and houses a flexible auditorium and a repositionable performance area which can be combined into various forms of performance spaces. The theatre’s north façade can be opened up extending the auditorium into the lobby, or even allowing for spill out space in the main complex promenade.
