Nanyang Technological University, South … Singapore

Info

The campus of Nanyang Technological University is a 200 hectare site approximately 25 kilometres from the city centre of Singapore. Known as the Yunnan Garden Campus, the campus is a valuable asset in Singapore’s densely built environment and is renowned for its generous greenscape, which includes the historic Yunnan Chinese Garden. BTA’s design for the proposed Academic Building South for Nanyang Technological University blends built form with the surrounding Yunnan Garden. The Academic Building South emerges out of the landscape as a series of rolling mountain formations with landscaped terraces. The form steps back from the south, creating a building massing that melts into the sloped landscape lining the northern edge of the Pan Island Expressway.

As the building mass undulates from south to north, the building parts at the centre to create a grand entry and a flowing connection between the lush, historical Yunnan Garden to the east and the open greenspace and campus buildings to the west. This new building positions itself as a gateway between the old campus buildings and residential halls to the east and new campus buildings to the north and west.

The interior layout creates a world-class learning environment through the introduction of flexible-use spaces that will adapt to changing pedagogical requirements, sustaining new forms of teaching and research into the future. The proposed building offers a signature place for congregating, interacting, and learning in the Yunnan Garden Campus.
