Tzu Chi Foundation

Vancouver, BC
Info

This project is about building atmosphere. With this humanist approach, the focus is moved from the building to the people, from the object to the subject, changing the viewpoint from designing architectural object to designing atmosphere.

This building is designed with space. Space to reflect, space to learn, space to come together, space to meditate, space to heal, and space to dream.

The timeless design of the new Tzu Chi Foundation is born from the gesture of embracing this space and created void. This gesture takes the shape of two building masses coming together enveloping a central conical void at the heart of the building. You are invited into the void and as the space turns inward, you are embraced by constant changing atmosphere. The central void opens to the sky, framing the passing clouds and letting the summer sun pierce through. Registering the passing of time through the changing seasons encourages us to look inwards and to be reflective and mindful that in the present, we also affect the future.

Creating an atmosphere of change, renewal, and flexibility, the void connects all the programmatic elements together, seamlessly interlocking the various floors. The glazed interior façade of the void allows for cross views between programs, furthering the inter-connectivity of the Foundation and promoting learning by allowing the Tzu Chi patrons to learn from one another through action. It is a warmhearted reminder to Tzu Chi volunteers of their vision and collective ambition.
